About Sleep in Ayurveda

and Sleep is an essential phenomenon in our lives. During our sleep, many vital physiological changes occur. People live healthily due to the repair and soothing mechanism of sleep. Ayurveda regards nidra (sleep) as one of the most essential factors responsible for a healthy and fulfilling life. Getting enough quality sleep at the right times can help protect mental health, physical health, quality of life.

A proper sleep can lead to happiness, proper nourishment, strength, virility, knowledge, and, life as it is a pillar of our life.

Proper sleep even enhances longevity in humans. Nowadays we see many people working continuously and their sleep hours are minimum and they tend to fall ill frequently. Also, there is excessive stress on the body due to less or lack of sleep. This cycle is disrupted if we have little or too little sleep. Lack of adequate sleep can affect judgment, mood, and the ability to learn and retain information.

Sleeping excessively, or not at all, at improper times destroys happiness, health, and life.

Many studies have shown that there is a very high risk of mortality if we consume less amount of sleep.

Along with this, one should not stay awake at night and sleep during the day. Performing both of these is injurious to health.

If we go through all these various things associated with it, there is one more aspect of sleep i.e. day time sleep. Ayurveda forbids day sleep except when we are tired, exhausted, and in summer or hot environments.

Sleep is a natural phenomenon and a necessity of our life. We should not disturb our sleep and have good sleep for a long healthy life. If we are aware of the important aspects of our lives, we can live a good life. We can also motivate others to follow the rules of sleep.
